The challenge

Open up the detail
without losing the context.

A history professor at UMass Boston wanted to bring years of research beyond a book-based experience. The source documents contained extensive visual information and hundreds or thousands of individual data points.

Presenting those materials online required more than a collection of scanned pages. Visitors needed a way to find relevant details, understand their relationships, and explore at a depth suited to their knowledge.

The experience

Different ways into
the same research.

We studied the documents and the information they contained before shaping the application. Search, sorting, and filtering gave less familiar audiences routes into the material, while flexible navigation supported educators and historians who wanted to explore more freely.

The interface brought the documents and their detailed information together, allowing the research to be encountered as an interactive resource.

The working system

Make room for
the research to continue.

The application paired the public experience with an administration interface for entering and maintaining the underlying data. New documents and revisions could be incorporated as the research developed.

The result was a working publishing and exploration tool: an accessible interface for visitors, supported by a structured way to manage a growing body of knowledge.

Experience applied

Complex information becomes more useful when the application accounts for both the people exploring it and the people maintaining it.
